Utility Partners was a software company retained by Pacificorp to roll-out an emergency service call routing system based on Utility Partner’s TroubleUP and MobileUP packaged systems. My primary responsibility was design and implementation of supporting servers, workstations, and network infrastructure; and management of the implementation project.
- Determined network support requirements for the call routing system, performed a network assessment of PacifiCorp’s multi-state LAN/WAN, and oversaw implementation of the resulting recommendations
- Designed and implemented the platform infrastructure, including server and workstation configuration standards, to support the system for 24/7 operation with five nines availability; utilizing Windows NT 3.51 and Oracle for NT 4.3.

Westerly Marine March 1994 – January 1995
Shipwright
Westerly Marine is a custom boat building company in southern California. While working for them, my responsibilities included almost every aspect of boat building, from plan reviews, carpentry, electrical and mechanical installation through launching. While there I was primarily involved in three major new construction projects:
- 36' cruising ketch, I did some of the electrical system installation, all of the electronics installation including instruments, radios, radar, and GPS.
- 49' glass bottom boat for Catalina, I did most of the interior carpentry, some fiberglass with wood and balsa core (water tight bulkhead and cabin top), all of the electrical system design and installation, I assisted with the engine and fuel system installation (twin rebuilt Detroit marine diesels) and I hung the shafts, props and rudders.
- 49' rigid bottom inflatable dive boat for Hawaii, I assisted with the interior carpentry, I installed all plumbing waste, bilge and fresh water, I designed and installed the entire electrical system, I installed all electronics including instruments, radios, radar, and GPS, I handled engine room carpentry and layout, and installed the engines and accompanying outdrives and the fuel system (twin Volvo Penta Turbo Diesels)
While at Westerly I also helped build molds and plugs for various new hulls, assisted in various other mechanical, electrical, and plumbing projects on other boats. I also helped out with some post build fitting out projects, and at one point I pulled lines from an existing hull that there were no plans for, and recreated the hull plans in AutoCAD.

Private Yacht s/v Jabula August 1992 – February 1993
1st Mate/Engineer
Jabula is a 112' Farr designed steel hulled sloop, with twin Cummins diesels. I managed a complete 1.3 million dollar refit and re-commissioning of her between August and December 1992. During the refit my responsibilities included keeping the ships books, managing up to 16 contractors, overseeing the overhaul and maintenance of all her systems, hull, and rig, and her interior redecoration. I also carried out several of the refit tasks myself including:
- Complete rewiring of her electrical systems (she had four separate systems, 12 & 24 VDC and 110 & 220 VAC)
- Overhaul of her hydraulics (primary winches, and one hydraulically driven generator)
- Full cycle maintenance of her engines and diesel generator (all three Cummins Marine)
- Rigging maintenance including a rebuild of mainsail powered furling mechanism built into the a stowaway mast, and a rebuild of her hydraulic tender lift
- Installation all new instrument suite including 2 radars, GPS, radios, standard and electronic compasses, autopilot, sailing instruments, and engine instruments
- Installation and configuration of a shipboard computer system, which included Maptech navigation, APT satellite weather imaging, and integrated SATCOM. The computer was also integrated with the radar, GPS and SSB radio.
From December through February 1993, I sailed aboard as 1st mate/Engineer on a cruise from San Diego to Puerto Vallarta and in and about the Gulf of Baja and back to San Diego, for a total of 120 days at sea. During this time my duties included officer of the watch, navigation, operation and maintenance of the vessel's engineering systems.

Deckhand/Bosun's Mate
Californian is 98' topsail schooner built in 1984, at the time owned by the Nautical Heritage Society, now owned by the San Diego Maritime Museum. I sailed aboard during mixture of day sails and coastal and blue water passages for total of 131 days at sea between San Diego, Hawaii, and Seattle. My responsibilities included watch standing, navigation, sailing rig maintenance.
